Gerolsteiner Brunnen and E.ON have started the construction of an innovative biomass cogeneration plant at the Gerolstein site. The plant, which is expected to go into operation at the beginning of 2027, will cover almost all of the company’s heating requirements (up to 95%) and a significant proportion of its electricity requirements (approx. 20%). The energy is obtained from regional woodchippings, which consist of forest residues, waste wood and sick wood as well as green waste. As a result, Gerolsteiner saves over 7,000 tons of COâ‚‚ every year.
This project is a further step in the company’s climate protection strategy, which has set itself the goal of reducing COâ‚‚ emissions at the site by 59% by 2030 compared to 2016. This target was achieved ahead of schedule in 2024. The partnership with E.ON underlines the importance of cooperation between industrial companies and energy suppliers for the implementation of the energy transition.
Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer emphasized the importance of sustainable investment for the region and the exemplary nature of the project at the event to mark the start of construction. Gerolsteiner is thus sending out a strong signal for a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply.
