Towards a Green and Collaborative European recovery

The special session of the European Clusters Alliance in cooperation with DG GROW

More than 170 participants on 22 June 2020 for the special session of the European Clusters Alliance: The corona pandemic does not seem to have stopped Europeans from working together for a sustainable economy.

Green Transition, Global Competitiveness and Digital Transition are the three main pillars of the new EU industrial strategy. Together with the well-known European Green Deal, European Climate Law and European Climate Pact, we seem ready to transform the EU economy for a sustainable future... and to involve citizens in this process. The European Climate Pact, for example, formulates new proposals of green action for a climate-neutral world and will include feedback from a public consultation, which was open until June 17.

But how will the clusters be involved? One answer already seems to be emerging - the European Resource Efficiency Knowledge Centre (EREK), a network of 250 green technology clusters across Europe. The EREK Knowledge Base covers 11 sectors of the industry in order to share more than 400 good practices, 130 measures, 80 technologies and more than 370 programmes helping companies to save water, carbon, materials, waste and energy including investment costs.

The challenge is to improve the competitiveness of SMEs while supporting a sustainable growth strategy. It is probably mainly a matter of rethinking innovation, for example by developing a circular economy model. Resource efficiency in design and production processes is a key factor for sustainable growth.

To promote the greening of European industry and help clusters and their members to become more resource efficient, the ECCP, in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre, has formed a new partnership with EREK. The new platform will include ECCP activities, but will go further and provide services to the entire cluster community.
